History of Havlíčkův Brod

Havlíčkův Brod - letecký snímekThe biggest town on the river Sázava was founded as a settlement on the business way in the first half of the 11th century. The first written mention preserved comes from 1256 and since 1269 the town had been named Smilův Brod according its founder Smil of Lichtenburk. In its surroundings a mint was established as this was a centre of silver mining. In 1308 the town was renamed Německý Brod and it was surrounded by walls. During Hussite Wars the town was on Catholics side and 1422 it was beaten and burned out by the army of Jan Žižka. In the second half of the 15th century the town started to expand again. It also expanded during the 16th century and it gained an important position. At the beginning of Thirty Years’ War in 1618 the town was occupied by the imperial army. In 1639 and 1645 the Swedish army plundered it. The plundering resulted in the decline and resettlement of inhabitants to exile. In 1649 plague devastated the town and in 1669 it was burned and in 1724 Saxons plundered it.Augustus monastery was founded in 1674 during anti-reformation period and in 1755 a grammar school was established. Thanks to the railway, which has been in operation since 1870, the town reached industrial boom, expansion of cloth making, wicker goods and starch. Gestapo headquartered here during German invasion. In 1945 it was finally renamed Havlíčkův Brod. The historical heart of the town has been declared an urban preservation area. The original gabled houses have been preserved.
The Havlíček´s house in Renaissance style dates back to the end of the 16th century. It was rebuilt in the second half of the 18th century. In 1833 Karel Havlíček Borovský bought it to live and work there. The house has been destroyed by fire several times. Since 1924 the house has been gradually modified into the Havlíček Museum. Today you can find the memorial of K. H. Borovský together with other permanent exhibitions there.
You cannot miss a Renaissance building of the Old Town Hall in the southern side of the square. The front side of the hall culminates in a niche with the skeleton of treacherous Hnát, who wanted to betray the town and leave to the mercy of the Germans. His skeleton was exhibited there after his execution. So called „Stone of Hnát“ on the bridge over the river Sázava reminds us of the place of execution.
There is Gothic church of St. Catherine from the 13th century diagonallyRadnice on the opposite side of the bridge. Among other interesting buildings belong New Town Hall, Magistrate’s office from the age of late Baroque (it is the seat of town offices today) and the Golden Lion House with Gothic pillar at the front.
In the middle of the square there is Baroque Plague Column raised in 1717. There are statues of St. Maria, St. Wenceslas, St. Andrew, St. Florien, and St. John of Nepomuk. These patrons safeguarded the town against plague, floods, fires and other disasters. They were made by the sculptor Giovanni Battista Bulla of Italian origin, who came from Chrudim. Not far from the column there is Koudela’s fountain from 1740 with the Statue of Triton. Koudela was a baker who cheated customers and he had to build the fountain as a punishment.
NáměstíIn the top part of the square there is the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. You can see the picture of the Guard Angel and a valuable main altar and three valuable bells. One of them is called Vilém and Kostel Nanebevzetí Panny Mariebelongs to one of the oldest ones in Bohemia.Augustian´s Monastery with the church of St. Family is situated in Štáflova Street. The monastery is used as a concert hall today. A Latin grammar school was established in its premises, named after its establisher Kateřina Kobzinová, Carolinum. Another important monument are Gothic church of St. Vojtěch. K. H. Borovský´s parents and his daughter are buried in the cemetery next to the church. Other important building is the Baroque Church of Holy Trinity with three-sided chapel of Holy Cross – it reminds us of the Catholics’ fight against heretics.
The monument of Karel Havlíček Borovský and the monument of his mother are situated in the municipal park. Štáfl´s cottage is a medieval house, which is located near the Church of St. Family and whose original interior attracts visitors.
